Last week I sat in a crowded room at the Jonesboro Town Offices while people from Beirut,Lebanon, Paris, France, Maine and Illinois discussed the possibility of a new venture at the Stored Solar biomass plant. Most of us were in sweaters, one of us was even knitting a sweater, and we sat packed shoulder to shoulder discussing issues of local and global economic and environmental significance.

Machias Selectboard asks for crackdown on speeding

Concerns about downtown speeding dominated the first part of the Machias Selectboard meeting held on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Selectboard Chairman Warren Gay lives downtown and said that he has recently received numerous complaints about speeding. “Court street is awful and it’s getting worse,” said Gay. “Last night two pickups went by and I doubt they were 10 feet apart, and wasn’t they flying?”

“We always had our own tree, and we were allowed to open one package on Christmas Eve,” recalls Linnie Crane, now 97, of her childhood. 

Many years before Black Friday shopping and Amazon madness, there was a deep appreciation for the simple gift of skating on the pond or venturing into the woods to find the perfect tree.

In Crane’s case, dad Dan Griffin cut down the tree, and siblings Daniel and Pauline were part of the seasonal fun.

East Machias woman dies in car accident

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department reported that on Sunday, Nov. 26 the Washington County Regional Control Center (RCC) received a 911 call reporting an accident on Route 192 in the town of Wesley. 

The RCC dispatched deputies, the Wesley Fire Department and Downeast ambulance. The Maine Warden Service and State Police also responded to the crash. Upon arrival, emergency crews confirmed a single vehicle was traveling toward Machias, lost control and had rolled over in the roadway.

Readers Theater “Christmas Carol” to benefit Machias Food Pantry

A readers theater production of “A Christmas Carol,” by Charles Dickens, will benefit the Machias Area Food Pantry this holiday season. Everyone is invited to the production at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, at Centre Street Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in downtown Machias.

Donations will be accepted at the door, with all proceeds going to the food pantry.

Harrington Irving thief arrested

 

Cameron Reed, 26, of Machias was arrested on Nov. 25, by Trooper Dana Austin, Trooper David Barnard, Trooper Miles Carpenter, and Trooper Gavin Endre as result of information from Washington County Lt. Timothy Tabbutt.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Reed held up the Irving station in Harrington on Thanksgiving Day using a knife. It is not known how much money was taken. A grainy image of Reed taken by the store’s video camera was circulated widely after the robbery.

Children’s chorus concerts set for Dec. 3, 10 in Eastport and Baileyville

 

The Washington County Children’s Chorus will present its “Répetoire de France” – Songs in the Holiday Spirit at two locations.  On Sunday, Dec. 3,  they will appear at the Christ Episcopal Church, 21 Key St., Eastport.  On Sunday, Dec. 10,  a repeat performance will be held at the People’s United Methodist Church, Third Ave & Summit St, in Baileyville.  Both presentations start at 3 p.m.

New meeting time for the St. Croix Valley Amateur Radio Club

During the business part of the November meeting of the St. Croix Valley Amateur Radio Club (SCVARC), it was voted to change our meeting time on the third Sunday of the winter months, beginning in January, from the usual 6:30 p.m. to the new time of 5:30 p.m.

The Maine Ham Radio Society, formerly called the Narraguagus Bay Amateur Radio Club, recently reactivated after a lengthy inactive period. On Nov. 19, members joined other hams in Milbridge to participate in a ham radio contest and to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. They made contacts from the east to west coasts as well as Canada.

Chorus to Premiere John Newell’s “Children of the Light”

Quoddy Voices, a community chorus formed in 2014, will present concerts on Friday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m., at the Eastport Arts Center. The group’s program is titled “A Light in the Darkness” and it will feature the first performance of director John Newell’s recent work “Children of the Light.” The work is a nine movement cantata for chorus, soprano and baritone soloists, and piano for four hands, which “celebrates the light universal and the unity and dignity of all beings,” according to Newell.

Calais Blue Devils dominate in volleyball

Two-time defending state champion Calais dominated the year’s Downeast Athletic Conference selections in volleyball.

Ann Scott’s club played four of their players on the all conference squad. The Blue Devils All Stars were Faith Tirell, Twyla Smiley, Abby Condon, and Kylie Donovan. The Blue Devils started off the season at 1-3, and went undefeated the rest of the way to finish 14-3 and a second state title in as many years.

Karlene Kelley Hale North Monmouth

 Karlene Kelley Hale, 74, beloved journalist, author and extraordinary friend to neighborhood children, died peacefully Nov. 22 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after a long fight with COPD. 

She was born in Machias on March 11, 1943, the daughter of Karl F. Kelley and Dorothy (Burnham) Kelley.

Karlene earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in 1965 and a master’s degree from Tufts University while her first husband, Charles Washburn, was earning a law degree at Boston University.

William C. Gardner, born on April 1, 1925 in Marshfield, died November 17, 2017 at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth after a brief illness. He was a WWII veteran.

 Bill worked for Herbert Hanscom Construction and St. Regis Paper Company for many years.

UMM Clipper mens’ basketball start the season 2-1

The University of Maine at Machias (UMM) men’s basketball team has gotten off to a 2-1 start under third-year coach, Troy Alley. UMM opened its 2017-18 season on the road against the Southern Maine Community College Rams on Oct. 29.

Both Yankee Small College Conference rivals played on even terms throughout most of the game. 

The contest was tied 39-39 at the break. UMM managed to hold off the Rams and outscore them 38-34 over the final 20 minutes to squeak out a 27-23 decision.

Lynx sweep UMM Clipper squads

The New Hampshire Technical Institute’s (NHTI) Lynx women’s and men’s basketball teams were both victorious over the visiting University of Maine at Machias (UMM) Clipper teams Nov. 12 in Concord, New Hampshire.

The Clipper women went into the contest with a 3-1 record, and were able to stay with the Lady Lynx for most of the game.

NHTI led 14-12 after a quarter before pulling away over the next 10 minutes. The Lynx outscored UMM 26-10 to go into the halftime break on top, 40-22.

The Town of Machiasport invites you to an open house to be held on Friday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come meet, greet and see some of the recent improvements made to the Machiasport Town Office.

It sure is  cold today!  I believe I will be wearing my sweater for a while..  I am lucky my mother used to knit sweaters, mittens, scarves and many other warm items!  Does anyone still knit?

Today, Eric Fernandez and his son Luke of Elliot, came down to pick up wreaths.  His sons, Zak and Luke have grown into very nice young men.  I feel honored to have been part of their lives.

Wreathing has started out here in the barn. Tim and I miss being a part of it.  We did it for over thirty years.

On Saturday, Nov. 18 Carroll and I took our grandson Konner out to ride the barrens looking for a deer. We traveled many miles and did not get to see one. We did see a few birds and other small animals on our travels. Later Carroll and I attended the public supper at the Narraguagus Snowmobile Club. It was a full house for their first supper and it was nice to chit chat with them all.

The Friends of the Whitneyville Public Library are getting ready for the Dec. 2 DECH Auxiliary Craft Fair that will be held at the Rose M. Gaffney gym.  Selling their handmade chocolates and crafts, the Friends of the Library are looking forward to another great fair.

This week Librarian Patricia Brightly visited Rose M. Gaffney and Jonesboro Elementary Schools with books. She read aloud to selected classrooms “The Wish” by Elle van Lieshout.  260 books are being shared with 13 classrooms. Last week Patricia shared 80 books with the Wesley Elementary School.

The 8th Annual Eastport Homes Christmas Tour, a holiday market with crafters at the Welcome Center, a visit from Santa Claus, a Christmas tree lighting at the Port Authority Building , lighting of ice candles (weather permitting) along the downtown stores and the breakwater, and a return of The Festival of Lights for Eastport’s boats, as well as a fundraiser for the Fuel Fund, Yule Fuel will all occur Saturday, Dec. 2.  Sunday, Dec.  3 is the snow date for the home tour.
