Community Raises $25,000 as Search for Missing Fisherman Continues

The family of a missing Steuben fisherman who did not return home from hauling lobster traps in Jonesport July 21 has not given up hope that 18-year-old Tylar Michaud will be found, according to family friend Joline Brown. Brown, who spearheaded a community effort to raise almost $25,000 in two days, said that volunteers will scour air, land, and sea as the likelihood of Michaud’s survival diminishes with each passing day.

Windstorm creates power outages impacting thousands in eastern Maine, Canada

A wind storm that hit early Monday morning knocked out power to thousands of Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative (EMEC) customers, including 100 percent of their Washington County customers and some customers in Aroostook County. 

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning from 8 p.m. Sunday, April 30, to 10 a.m. on Monday, May 1, anticipating gusts up to 50 m.p.h. Along the coast.

Treasure hunt continues for Washington County meteorite; museum lab processing ‘loads’ of submissions

Maine museum offers $25,000 reward for large Washington County meteorite

Following Saturday’s meteorite event over Washington County and New Brunswick, Canada, the Maine Mineral and Gem Society is offering a $25,000 reward for the first one-kilogram meteorite recovered.

According to NASA’s Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science (ARES)  lab, radar data picked up almost five minutes of meteorite falls into Washington County and New Brunswick just before noon on Saturday, April 8.

Cutler man reported dead in South Carolina plane crash

Andy Patterson of Cutler is reported to have died in a plane crash Saturday, March 25, in Johns Island, South Carolina.

Patterson was piloting the small aircraft when it crashed. Initial reports indicated Patterson was traveling with a passenger, but officials later clarified Patterson was alone in the Piper PA-28, according to the Charleston County News.

The Machias Valley Municipal Airport, where Patterson served on the airport committee, today posted about Patterson’s death.
