Fatal Crash in Jonesboro Leaves One Dead

The Maine State Police, Washington County Sheriff’s deputies and the Jonesboro Fire Department responded to a fatal auto accident on Route 1 in Jonesboro Tuesday, Aug. 8 near the Jonesboro-Columbia Falls town line.

Shannon Moss of the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a press release that evening that 68-year-old Diana O’Neal of Machias was pronounced dead on the scene. Lenore Faulkingham, 69, of Whitneyville, and her 15-year-old grandson were transported to Down East Community Hospital in Machias where they were being treated for “non-life-threatening injuries” the release continued, as was O’Neal’s sister, Tammy who was driving a 2003 Subaru Forester.

“Until further notice the seafood van won’t be on the dike in Machias or the farmers market in Danforth,” Earle’s Fresh Seafood posted on their Facebook account Tuesday evening, “Lenore and Nathan were in a bad car accident today. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. We will update when we can.” 

According to authorities, the crash, which closed Route 1 for much of the afternoon while emergency crews responded, remains under investigation at this time.
