Washington County Sheriff’s Office releases details of two traffic fatalities over holiday weekend

Two people have died in two separate Washington County road accidents that took place over the long holiday weekend.

In Perry, a single-vehicle crash on Route 1 took the life of Rob Zuckerman, 25, of Eastport. Down East Ambulance, Pleasant Point Ambulance, the Perry Fire Department, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the crash, which was determined to take place after Zuckerman lost control of his vehicle.

Traffic was rerouted from Route 9 into Machias on Monday, May 30, after a two-vehicle crash took place at 1:25 p.m. in Dayblock Township. According to the sheriff’s office, George Small, 81, of Robbinston, was traveling east toward Calais when he crossed the center line into the path of Evgeny Mednokov, 41, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, who was traveling toward Bangor. Small struck the trailer of Mednokov’s 2019 International Tractor and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mednokov was not injured in the crash.

The portion of Route 9 between Routes 192 and 193 was closed for several hours during the crash investigation. In addition to the sheriff’s office, the state police, Wesley Fire Department, Baileyville Fire Department, and Down East Ambulance responded to the scene.

Deputies are being assisted by the Maine State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit and Reconstruction Units. The investigation is ongoing.
