Memorial Day observations planned Downeast

In Machias, American Legion Post #9 will depart its Court Street location around 8 a.m. for wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorial monuments in Machias, East Machias, and Machiasport. At 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony at Longfellow Cemetery, Court Street, Machias, and at 10:30 a.m., participants for the parade should line up at Machias Memorial High School. The parade will proceed down Court Street to the monument at Porter Memorial Library, then proceeding to Center Street, down to Route 1/Main Street, and across the dike to Varney’s Insurance Agency.

In Cherryfield, Memorial Day Exercises have been scheduled for Monday, May 29.  The program will begin at 1 p.m. at Charles Wakefield Memorial Bandstand, and the parade follows at 2 p.m. to Stewart Park for the salute to the war dead at sea.  The parade marches next to the Civil War monument in the old Pine Grove Cemetery for the salute to the war dead on land. The Cherryfield Band will play as they have since just after the Civil War. The teachers of Cherryfield Elementary School have selected the 8th-grade orator to recite the Gettysburg Address carrying on a 125-year tradition in town.  

In Addison, the Friends of the Church on the Hill, in cooperation with the VFW Post 11553 and the women’s auxiliary of Addison, are sponsoring a Memorial celebration on Memorial Day in Addison at 10 a.m. on May 29. The ceremonies will begin on the lawn at the Mayhew Library, with music, speakers, and flowers being placed at the monument there.

From the Library, the service will continue at the town landing with a wreath placed into the river to commemorate those lost at sea. The conclusion of the service will be at the Church Hill Cemetery around the flagpole. Participants may walk or ride a bus provided to attend all parts of the ceremonies. Refreshments at the town hall after.
