Santa Maria to port in St. Andrews

A replica of the Nao Santa Maria, one of the most famous ships in history, will be docking at the St. Andrews wharf from Sept. 13-15 and will be open for visiting before its next stop in Portland, scheduled for Sept. 19-22. The visits are part of the ship’s North American tour and this is the ship’s first visit to Canada.

1st Annual Campobello Island Seaglass Festival

The 1st Annual Campobello Island Seaglass Festival will take place on September 13-15. This mini festival will include beach walks, seaglass talks, crafters markets and more.

“This year is a trial run, a ‘soft opening’ to get ideas and feedback for a full festival in 2020,” said Stephanie Anthony of the Island Seaglass Festival. “It will be three days of beach walks and talks, Beachcomber's Bazaars, etc. but on a smaller scale, due to time constraints, than we have planned for future festivals.”

Eastport to host Maine State Chili Championship

A chili cooking contest is planned for Saturday, August 10, in downtown Eastport. This won’t be just any chili contest, however; it is the CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) Maine State Chili Championship.

Competitive chili cook Jenny Windsor and her husband Jack, fairly new residents of Alexander, attended a small chili cookoff in Calais last fall. It was that event that inspired Jenny to organize this competition that raises funds for local charities.

Bargaining stalled, but vigil draws crowd in support of Calais nurses

Although over 100 turned out for a vigil in community support for Calais nurses and technicians, negotiations between employees and Calais Regional Hospital persist in a stalemate.

“There are dozens of openings at the hospital right now that management cannot fill,” said Alison Monaghan, RN, after the vigil. “If there aren’t enough employees, then this hospital cannot function properly, and that’s just not acceptable for our patients.”

MLB Jr. Home Run Derby to be held in Calais

The Major League Baseball Jr. Home Run Derby is back for a second year in Calais. This fun and exciting youth competition is hosted by Calais-Area Fall Baseball, under the direction of coaches Matt Vinson and Matt Dana.

This local event is a free way for all area youngsters to showcase their hitting abilities, with the opportunity of competing at the National Finals in Cleveland during MLB All-Star Week in July.
