Surprise! Machias Already has a Harbor … Sort of
Top left photos show the original Rim Bridge, with a tall-masted ship waiting for the middle section to be turned so it can pass through. Bottom left shows the current bridge connecting Machiasport with East Machias. The photo on the right shows the earlier bridge after it was destroyed by a storm and ice in the early 1970s. The biggest hurdle to dredging the river as part of a proposed harbor in Machias is whether the current bridge offers enough clearance for the equipment used by the Army Corps of Engineers to pass through.
