Washington Academy Wrestlers bring home the hardware

The Washington Academy Raiders have a mix of new and returning wrestlers, both boys and girls, competing in the Class B North Division. WA is starting off the season with the largest squad in recent history. At the Penobscot Valley High School Pre-Season Invitational Wrestling Tournament, the WA wrestlers showed up determined to get their first win.

Noah Carver, son of Buzz and Suzanne Carver of Beals Island, was selected to be a member of the Honors Performance Series which will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City.  The Series is a group comprised of high school music students who will come together in New York to perform, tour the city, and attend a Broadway play of their choice.

Whale proposals draw hundreds to E. Machias lobster council meeting

Due to its controversial agenda, attendance was unusually high at a Zone A Lobster Council Meeting meeting held Tuesday, June 18 at Washington Academy in East Machias. State scientists and regulators came to discuss proposed regulations to reduce mortality risk to the North Atlantic right whale.

DOC opposes reopening of Machiasport prison, suggests Route 1 sites in East Machias, Machias

At a public hearing which ran more than three hours on Wednesday, March 27, legislators, former employees and concerned Downeast residents spoke in favor of reopening the Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport and Maine Department of Corrections Commissioner Randall Liberty spoke in opposition to reopening the site.

East Machias selectboard votes to demolish Stone Soup building destroyed by fire

The East Machias Board of Selectmen voted Friday, March 8 to authorize the demolition and removal of debris from a fire that destroyed Stone Soup Cafe and Market on Sept. 11, 2018.  Selectmen Bucket Davis, Will Tuell and Dale Richardson were all in attendance at the Friday morning meeting.

The demolition is expected to take place on Monday, March 11. The Stone Soup property is located along Route 1 in East Machias.
