Washington County Cold Weather Shelters for February 2-4, 2023

The following organizations have made provisions to serve as warming shelters during the unusually cold temperatures predicted for Friday and Saturday. Some will be open day and night, some only during the daytime, and some only overnight.

 If cold weather conditions create an emergency for you or your family, call 911. 

Daytime warming shelters

Machias: The University of Maine at Machias Reynolds-Murdock Center will waive all admission fees Feb. 2-4, allowing residents to warm there Thursday and Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. UMaine Machias is located on Dublin Street, Machias.

Cherryfield: The Weald Bethel Community Center on Maine Seacoast Mission’s campus will be open as a warming center on Friday, Feb. 3, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tea, hot cocoa, and coffee will be available. The center is located at 39 Weald Bethel Lane, Cherryfield.

Baileyville: The Baileyville Town Office will be available as a warming center. If the office is closed after 4 p.m., call dispatch at 427-6992, and someone will let you in. The town office is located at 63 Broadway, Baileyville. 

Princeton: The Princeton Firehouse will be open Friday and Saturday. Contact Fire Chief Tony Ramsdell at 952-2577 to be let in. The firehouse is located at 16 Mill Street, Princeton.

Overnight Warming Shelters

Calais and Machias: The DownEast Recovery Support Centers will be open Friday night into Saturday to offer overnight warming options. The center is located at 311 Main Street, Calais. The Machias center is located at 11 Free Street. Call 259-6238.

Dennysville: The Dennysville Snowmobile & ATV Club is open 24/7 with full facilities and invites anyone in need to use it as a warming shelter. If anyone requires a ride to the club, they may call 263-6306. The club is located at 24 Milwaukee Road, Dennysville. 

]Ellsworth: The Healthy Acadia Warming Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through April, and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 a.m. through the month of February. The center is located at 24 Church Street, Ellsworth. Call 412-2288 for availability. 

Jonesport: The Jonesport Fire Station will be open as a warming station from Thursday evening, Feb. 2, through Sunday, Feb. 5. The fire station is located at 44 Main Street, Jonesport. Call 497-5702.

Lubec: The Lubec Fire Station will be open as a warming center overnight on Friday, Feb. 3. The fire station is located at 40 School Street. Call 733-4641.
